We hand-pick the very best adventure moments of 2019 to inspire your 2020 getaway

What do you look for in a game-changing adventure?

A bold and daring experience, perhaps, that stretches your boundaries in the best possible way.

The ability to get off-radar, to new and unexplored frontiers.

The chance to put your phone down and really connect with the sense of a place, beyond the tourist hype.

A set of like-minded explorers to share the moment with, and cheer you on along the way.

At Flash Pack, we seek to provide all these central ingredients and a few more (surprise, delight, awe) for good measure. Here are our very best moments of shared adventure in 2019; created by solo travellers who came alone and gained a whole crew of like-minded adventurists en-route.

The one in the desert

Jordan is brimming with ancient wonders, but perhaps the greatest of these is the Wadi Rum: a vast geological playground filled with sandstone arches and towering rocks.

Adventurist Sanjay let loose his inner explorer here, amid the billowing dunes and red-rock wilderness. The experience is capped by a night under the stars in a Bedouin camp, coupled with a sunrise camel ride.

Check out our Jordan trip.

The one that got zip-lined

We like to think Flashpackers live life to the full, and here’s Instagrammer Kremzo doing exactly that. He fuelled up on courage  – and no small amount of vim – for this daring zipline over the Balinese jungle.

The activity is an optional extra in our Bali trip, which also takes in volcanic climbs, yoga  and island living.

Get involved in our Bali escape.

The one on a glacier

There are so many things  you do on a glacier: ice-hiking, caving and of course, snowmobiling.

Here’s solo traveller Jaime and her squad giving a 21st Century update to the Game of Thrones landscape of Iceland, courtesy of their set of sweet wheels.

Exactly the thing needed to make Sólheimajökull Glacier even *more* magical than usual.

Is Iceland calling to you?

The one with turtles

You won’t find yourself short of wildlife wows on our East Africa getaway. But even after the bucket-list safaris are done, the delights just keep on coming.

Flashpacker Bea has found herself some sea turtles to hang out with here off the shores of Zanzibar, and clearly, she couldn’t be happier.

Come to Tanzania and Zanzibar

The one with the views

Justin and his group of fearless wanderers end their China trip on a high by hitting the skywalk together on Jin Mao Tower.

The world’s tallest fenceless walkway affords incredible views of the Shanghai skyline – and you’ll be happy to know, visitors are buckled in nice and tight.

This counts as an extra activity on our escape to the Land of the Red Dragon.

Be wowed by wondrous China.

The one that got leaping

If there’s one place you should go chasing waterfalls in, make it Croatia.

Central Europe’s ancient gem is packed with stunning landscapes, from long-forgotten rivers to lush forested valleys and the ever-beautiful Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Follow James’ lead by making the most of this natural wonderland, with waterfall bathing, rafting, hiking and more.

Come explore Croatia with us.

The one about family

Flash Pack trips are all about family – not your real one, of course, but the one you bond with over a week or more of life-changing travel.

In this post, Nina exactly sums up how this small group of like-minded strangers become your everything in a very small space of time.

Surrounded by your kind of people, you’ll rapidly form ties that’ll see you through epic moments, as you stretch your boundaries together.

Say hi to our Asia adventures.

The one under the sea

The underwater kingdom is ripe for exploration, especially when you throw the prospect of a World War II shipwreck into the mix.

The SS USAT Liberty has been beached off the coastal region of Amed in Bali ever since it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942, and its shell has since been transformed into a haven for coral reef and tropical fish.

Like many before him, Flashpacker Jeremy relishes the chance to get up-close with the trevally, lizardfish, barracuda and more that cluster around the ship’s remains.

Come find more snorkelling adventures in Belize.

The one on safari

Safaris are amazing for all kinds of reasons: the sweet digs, the beautiful open plains, the up-close encounters with some of the planet’s most magnificent animals.

And, as Laila gives a nod to here, safari sundowners are the cherry on the cake of the experience.

This is your chance to reflect on an incredible day of game drives, as the skyline turns a burnished gold and the nocturnal chorus of the bush sets in all around. Unforgettable.

Join us in Zimbabwe and Botswana.

The one with the penguins

View this post on Instagram

Boulders Penguin Colony, Cape Town ⁣⁣⁣⁣ •⁣⁣⁣⁣ •⁣⁣⁣⁣ This was one of my first stops in Cape Town. This beach is near Simon’s Town and a great little reserve to watch the penguins swim, play and sleep. You can’t touch them —or I should say you SHOULDN’T touch them —since so many people try to. It can get pretty crowded on the boardwalk where the people are allowed and the ticket to the reserve is R75 for adults. There are other places you can go to see the penguins too such as Stony Point Penguin Colony in Betty’s Bay 🐧 ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ ✈️🐒⁣⁣⁣ •⁣⁣⁣ •⁣⁣⁣⁣ #thetravelingmonkey #travel #explore #wanderlust #goexplore #girlswhotravel #sheexplores #wearetravelgirls #passionpassport #letsgoeverywhere #girlsborntotravel #instatravel #agirlstravelpassport #southafrica #capetown #penguins #boulderbeach #beach ⁣#visitcapetown #capetownlife #capetownliving #penguinsofcapetown #penguinlife #penguinlove #simonstownbeach #simonstown #simonstownpenguins #capetowninfo #girlsborntotravel

Penguins are Mother Nature’s reason to be happy with the world. And in Simon’s Town on South Africa’s Cape Peninsula, you’ll find an entire beach-load of happiness.

Watch the adorable creatures eat, sleep and play in their natural environment – before later swimming with seals (aka, the friendly “dogs of the ocean”) and spying out humpback whales and meerkats as you move along the spectacular Garden Route, from West to East.

Jump right into joyous South Africa.

The one that got kingly

There are some places on earth that are so majestic, they have to be seen to be believed.

So it is with Egypt’s Valley of the Kings that spools out along the west bank of the Nile. Tombs and treasures abound in this elaborate burial ground for the country’s Old Kingdom pharaohs.

Here’s Flashpacker Mike channelling his best Indiana impression in the archaeology professor’s go-to turf.

Egypt, here we come.

The one on an island

This brilliant snap by adventurer Robin exactly sums up the joie de vivre of being on your very own secret island.

On Flash Pack’s escape to the Philippines, we cast you away to a hidden beach in the Bacuit Archipelago, a maze of turquoise lagoons and limestone karsts that promise nothing but the good life.

Your breakout comes with a private boat for jetting around, a private jet for beach barbeques and a series of one-man mesh tents for you to relax in beneath a canvas of stars. It’s the ultimate off-grid escape.

Anyone for a break to the Philippines?

The one with wide skies

This is 100% not posed at all, in the slightest… (yes it is) 🚵🏻‍♀️⠀ ⠀ My most recent video is Sacred Valley! ⠀ ⠀ It's full of some beaut drone shots (didn't lose it on this day, nailed it) and some slightly hectic @gopro footage of me scrambling around, as well as a very cheeky shower shot that I ummed and ahhed about including 😬⠀ ⠀ The link is up in my profile 🤘🎥⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #youtube @phmcder @mtn_kate @kgibson1981 @myjunk101 @epsteiner @flashpack #flashpack#picsworthsharing #visitperu #perutravel #sacredvalley #sacredvalleyperu #canonphotographer #mountainbiking #biking #adventuresports #adventurephotographer #IamATraveler #amtb @Travelboggeres #Femmetravel #wearetravelgirls #sheisnotlost #travellershouts #radgirlslife #WeLiveToExplore #LetsGoEverywhere #exploretocreate #travelandlife #femaletravelbloggers #femalecreators #sheexplores #shewanders

For a bike ride of dreams, look no further than the Sacred Valley of Peru. On a clear, crisp day, the horizon stretches out in all directions, framed by the snow-capped Andean peaks.

Inca ruins beckon around each new corner on an invigorating route that will well and truly put the wind in your sails.

It’s also very much off-radar, meaning you can unplug in the very heart of a breathtaking pre-Columbian landscape. No wonder Rachel here is a fan.

Is Peru made for you?

The one with the body rafts

Without call for specialist equipment, body-rafting is one of the more sustainable ways to enjoy settings such as Sicily’s Alcantara Gorges.

Basically, you use your body to swim, freedive and scramble across a series of ravines and river canyons that stretch across the northern slopes of Mount Etna.

It’s an exhilarating ramble that lets you get head-on with nature, as Slinky Twiggy’s post here shows.

Get set for Sicily.

The one up a mountain

One of the best things about adventure is the way in which it opens you up to your own capabilities.

You would probably never consider yourself the kind of person who could hike to over 13,000 feet in the remote paths and screes of Toubkal – until you’re there, doing exactly that.

Here’s hiker Kevin and his team feeling elated after stretching their limits on North Africa’s highest peak.

Hop on-board with us for a Moroccan hike.

The one in a fjord

For anyone who hasn’t visited before, Norway has the most incredible sense of space.

Unlike many other places in Europe, the scenery is uncluttered – especially in the mirror-like lakes and mountains of its world-famous fjords.

As solo traveller Katie discovered, this is a destination for pure adventure (and plenty of me time, too): from kayaking to glacier hiking and beyond.

Let’s go to Norway.

The one with the temples

Yes! Another picture of the sunrise in Bagan! This one was from the first day I went to see the sunrise! Just can’t get enough of it! Holding the sun in my hand this time☀️ • • Bagan has over 4000 temples and pagodas. When you are in Bagan you just live to see the sunrises and the sunsets and during the day you go pagoda hunting on an e-bike to find the perfect sunrise and sunset spot. Or we just drove around and got lost. That was basicly what I did for two days in Bagan. A lot of temples are forbidden to climb. Some locals said you could go on this one (but we had to climb a fence which had only a small space between the fence and the wall), while other locals spotted us and told us to get out because it was forbidden to climb it.. 😅 Because our guide told us it was ok, we stayed there.. We couldn’t leave this magical spot!! I really loved my time in Bagan! I wish I can return one day there with the love of my life and share this magical moment with him ✨ • • #myanmar #myanmarburma #bagan #exploremyanmar #discovermyanmar #temple #bagantemples #sunrise #girlswhowander #solotravel #amazingsunrise #hotairballoon #beautifulplaces #beautifuldestinations #travelpassport #travelgram #travelphotography #picoftheday #wanderlust #girlswhotravel #sheisnotlost #backpacking #magic #bucketlist #traveldreamseekers

Nothing says serenity like the time-honoured pagodas and stupas of Bagan, gilded in the glow of the rising sun.

Myanmar’s UNESCO city is home to some of the world’s oldest and most ornate Buddhist temples, yet it’s still relatively unknown compared to other major archeological sites.

Here’s Flashpacker Mel savouring the moment as the horizon lights up with hundreds of dawn hot air balloons.

Get off-radar in magical Myanmar.

The one upside down

What we truly *love* about a Flash Pack trip is the way it can change up your perspective.

Sometimes, this occurs in a figurative sense: you return to life with a fresh sense of energy and optimism, having been fuelled by everything you’ve experienced.

And occasionally this also happens literally, as seen here with anti-gravity yoga in the jungle hills of Ubud, Bali. Thank you Mr Yogi for this wonderful glimpse of a world turned upside down.

The one with the sleigh

View this post on Instagram

Sunrise husky sledding anyone!? 🛷❄️🐕 This is, without a doubt, one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in all my days as a travel blogger, lol. I remember seeing pictures of my friend doing this somewhere in Scandinavia many years ago, and it’s been on my bucket list ever since!! . . My Finland tour with @flashpack was one epic 30th birthday adventure in the Arctic Circle, and has definitely got me stoked on the #nomorenotyets mindset! . . What is your biggest ‘not yet’!? Is there any experience (big or small) that you are hoping to do this year? . . I invite you to share a picture of the moment you achieve any of your “not yets” by using the hashtag #NoMoreNotYets . I’ve got a few more on my list that I want to accomplish, and I look forward to seeing yours as well! . . Let’s make 2019 a year we’ll never forget!! ✈️🌏📸💙 #Flashpack #ad

Wide skies, snowy tundras and a sleigh ride pulled by huskies build the scene for a bucket-list moment in Finland.

Blogger Jones Around The World followed in the footsteps of many by choosing to spend his 30th birthday this way.

From a golden sunrise to a Narnia-esque winter wilderness – not to mention the lovely dogs –who could ask for more?

Live the dream in winter Finland.
